Josef Merkx, the representative of the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, said the paparazzi magnets wanted to have a low-profile visit with no news media, so reporters were notified only after they had left the country.

Jolie, a UNHCR goodwill ambassador since 2001, and her partner Pitt met with the refugees then handed out Christmas gifts to refugee children. Later they met with Costa Rican government officials, Merkx said Tuesday.

There are 11,500 refugees living in Costa Rica, some 10,000 of which are from Colombia, Merkx said.

According to a UNHCR statement in Spanish, Jolie described the four decade-long Colombian conflict as the biggest humanitarian tragedy in the western hemisphere, but despite that receives little international attention.
